Driving law

Totting Time

When we commit driving offences we often find ourselves awarded points, and this can result in us accumulating several within a few months. A relatively minor speeding offence can result in 3 points, as can minor defects that the police identify when they pull you over. Similarly, being found to be driving with no insurance, or using a mobile phone at the wheel can result in 6 points per occasion. If we “tot up” 12 points in 3 year period we will be awarded 6 month driving ban, which can have disastrous consequences for us and those who depend on us.

Although its easy to criticise those who find themselves in that position, how many of us can honestly say that we haven’t broken the speed limit four times over the course of 3 years? The voluminous amount of speed cameras in certain parts of the country only add to the likely hood of us finding ourselves in a “totting” situation?

However, if we have a genuine need to keep driving which is one that would cause exceptional hardship to others, there is a chance we can keep our licence and drive with 12, 13 or maybe even 14 points on it. The finding of exceptional hardship by the magistrates can keep the roofs over our head, the shoes on the children’s feet, and our loved ones attending needed medical appointments. It is obviously advisable not to get into this situation, but in real life we are only four occasions with three years away from being exactly there.

A well planed mitigation, providing the relevant circumstances exist within your life, can provide the means for you to avoid small mistakes having dire consequences on your life and accelerate the time you can recover from a totting situation and get back on with building your life.
